Most importantly, the soft claw can fit the surface of the workpiece to the greatest extent, which can not only ensure the transmission of greater torque, but also avoid the clamping injury of the workpiece. These advantages are unmatched by the hard claw.
The following problems should be paid attention to when making soft claws:
1. Selection of soft claw material
“Soft” here means: good processing performance does not mean that it must be lower than the hardness of the workpiece (for mass production, the hardness of the soft claw will have a great impact on the processing stability. Choosing a soft claw material with higher hardness than the workpiece will not only improve the service life of the soft claw, but also have a positive impact on the processing stability).
2. Selection of soft claw size
The soft claw shall hold at least 1/3 of the length of the workpiece.
3. Installation position of soft claw on chuck
Any T-shaped block exceeding the maximum diameter of the chuck is not allowed, which will have a great safety risk.
4. Pressure and position when using the claw dresser
It is recommended that the pressure during use is close to that during workpiece processing, the chuck is in the middle of the activity range during machining, and the direction of clamping force during claw repair is consistent with that of workpiece clamping force.
5. Influence of chuck diameter and rotating speed on clamping force
Due to the centrifugal force, the clamping force will be greatly reduced when the chuck operates at high speed. Please refer to the instructions on the chuck for details.
6. Make an inner hole with the same diameter as the workpiece
Reduce the possibility of clamping the workpiece.
7. Add undercut
To ensure the repeated positioning of the workpiece.
8. Remove burrs and sharp corners on the soft claw
Be careful not to scratch your hand.

The following problems should be paid attention to when making or repairing the soft claw:
The T-shaped block shall not exceed the maximum diameter of the chuck. The chuck pressure during claw repair is close to the pressure during workpiece processing. The chuck is in the middle of the moving range. The direction of clamping force during claw repair is consistent with that of workpiece clamping force. Pay attention to the rotating speed during claw repair, add tool return groove, and remove burrs and sharp corners.
When both types of claw trimmers cannot meet the conditions, we need to make a special claw trimmer, such as machining the lower ring to repair the outer claw.
When the part to be clamped is relatively long, the workpiece and soft claw can not fully fit, commonly known as “bell mouth”, specifically, there is a gap between the top of the soft claw and the workpiece.
The most effective solution is to process the taper on the soft claw, measure the size of the gap through the feeler gauge, measure the clamping length, and then calculate the taper.
